Panama City Beach ranked third best spring break destination for families
According to a report from familydestinationsguide.com, Panama City Beach, Fla., is the third best place in North America for families to go this spring break.
The organization wrote that Panama City Beach, which has more than a dozen beaches along the coast, is an amazing place to get your fill of bright sunshine, white sandy shores, and sparkling emerald seas.
From an airboat excursion, families can enjoy watching exotic wildlife like alligators, bald eagles, dolphins, and more.
Shell Island for fishing and Pier Park for dining and shopping are two of the many amenities. From atop the SkyWheel, visitors can also take in a “spectacular view” of the Emerald Coast.
New Artificial Reef Set Up Off Florida’s Gulf Coast
Florida’s waters around Destin-Fort Walton Beach now feature a brand-new artificial reef.
On January 15, 2023, the former research vessel R/V MANTA was deliberately sunk about 16 nautical miles (30 km) offshore.
The Okaloosa County Tourism Development Department reports that:
“This expansion supports a long-term vision of continuing to grow as a sought-after destination for those seeking premier fishing and diving opportunities,” the statement reads.
In the coming weeks, the sister ship of the MANTA, the R/V DOLPHIN, is also scheduled to sink in the area.
Trey Goodwin, chairman of the Okaloosa Board of County Commissioners, stated:
“We are extremely proud of the work that the Coastal Resource team has done with this effort. This is an exciting new addition to our growing artificial reef system. It will not only provide additional opportunities for fishing and diving, but it will also continue to support vital Gulf of Mexico ecosystems.
The “Christ of the Gulf” statue of Jesus on the R/V MANTA, which was submerged in approximately 110 feet (33.5 meters) of water, pays homage to the series of other statues found all over the world.
The statue is at a depth of about 50 feet (15 meters) on the top deck, making it accessible to even novice divers.
Glenn Camplejohn, a member of the Deepwater Mafia, a Christian dive club based in Mississippi that regularly dives in the region, created “Christ of the Gulf.”
Alex Fogg, Manager of Coastal Resources, stated:
“The R/V MANTA and R/V DOLPHIN deployments in the coming weeks are significant not only for the recreational opportunities they provide, but also for the habitat they provide for essential fish species that live in our region. We now have more than 400 artificial reefs, and it’s been amazing to see how our efforts are protecting these delicate environments as well as providing valuable experiences on the water. We anticipate a celebratory year of even more significant costal efforts with the addition of both vessels.
